β Quick Rule: What Are Articles?
Articles are words used before nouns to show whether we are talking about a general or a specific person, place, animal, or thing.
There are three articles in English:
A, An and The
1. A β Use a before a singular noun that begins with a consonant sound.
π a pencil, a boy, a school, a dress
2. An β Use an before a singular noun that begins with a vowel sound.
π an apple, an elephant, an artist, an umbrella
3. The β Use the when we are talking about a particular or specific person, place, animal, or thing.
π the sun, the doctor, the key on the table
π‘ Remember: We choose a or an according to the sound of the word, not just its first letter.
