What is Future Continuous Tense?

Future Continuous tense is used to describe actions which will be in progress in the immediate or distant future.

It tells us what someone will be doing at a specific time or during a particular period in the future.

Examples:

• My friends will be arriving at any time from now.
• My mother will be cooking food for me soon.
• I will be playing the guitar in the afternoon.

Future Continuous Tense Formula

Affirmative Sentences

Subject + will be + verb-ing + object

• She will be writing a book.
• They will be playing cricket.

Negative Sentences

Subject + will not be + verb-ing + object

• She will not be writing a book.
• They will not be playing cricket.

Interrogative Sentences

Will + subject + be + verb-ing + object?

• Will she be writing a book?
• Will they be playing cricket?

Time Expressions in the Future Continuous Tense

• Tomorrow
• Tomorrow afternoon
• Tomorrow morning
• Next week
• Next month
• Next year
• At 7:00 am tomorrow
• All day tomorrow

When Do We Use Future Continuous Tense?

A. An action continuing at a specific time in the future

I will be studying at 6 p.m.

Rahul will be cycling at 8.00 am.

B. An action that will be in progress during a future period

We will be travelling throughout the day.

I will be listening to music in an hour.

C. Asking politely about someone’s future plans. We use it when we do not wish to appear to be pressing for a definite answer.

Will you be using the phone this evening?

Will you be seeing your grandmother tomorrow?
