What is the Simple Present tense?

Simple Present Tense is a tense expressing an action that is currently going on or is used when the verb refers to the present time.

Example: Sita goes to the market every Monday.

When do we use the Simple Present Tense?

We use the Simple Present Tense for:-

  1. To describe present habits.

Example: I play chess every day.

  • To describe universal truths.

Example: The sun rises in the east.

  • For expressing a future event that is bound to occur at a fixed time.

Example: The train arrives at 1:30 pm.

  • For introducing quotations.

Example: Ravi says, “Always study hard.”

  •    Headlines in English Newspapers.

Example: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri gets one-year extension.

Rules for Adding -s and -es

  1. At the end of the verb if you find ‘o’, ‘s’, ‘x’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’, ‘ss’, then we will use “es” with third person singular subject.

Example: Go – goes

Pass – passes

  • At the end of the verb, if you find ‘y’ then change it into ‘ies’ with third person singular subject.

Example: Cry – cries

Study – studies

  • If ‘y’ comes after any vowel then only ‘s’ will be  added.

Example: Buy – buys

Play – plays

Structure of the Simple Present Tense.

Affirmative: Subject + verb(1st) +s/es +object

She goes to the church.

Negative: Subject +don’t /doesn’t +Verb (1st) +object

Example: He doesn’t do his homework.

Interrogative: Do/ Does + subject +verb (1st) +object?

Example: Do you play the guitar?

Interrogative: Wh-question +do/ does +subject +verb (1st) +object?

Example: Why do you get sad?
