Whether artificial intelligence is harmful or helpful for students is a controversial debate in 2026. These days, children have access to AI. It makes learning easier for them, it is available anytime, gives personalized learning, saves time, and also prepares students for the future. However, it has its own downsides as it may affect students; they may become lazy, it reduces their creativity, gives wrong information, increases the screentime of students, and they may even cheat.

- Making learning easier.
AI helps students to learn more smartly. Students learn to ask better questions. It gives an answer in a fun simple and easy way so that students remember. All the students need to do is give instructions to AI.
- Available anytime. AI is available 24 x 7 to students. They can learn, review, and practice with just one tool. It can help students to write an essay and do assignments. They can make notes and prepare summaries.
- Personalized learning. It identifies the student’s point of confusion. AI provides a personalized explanation that a teacher cannot offer in a crowded room. It gives targeted feedback, which accelerates learning exponentially. The child engages in a dialogue with the AI.
- Saves time. AI saves time by establishing a smart study room. The AI boost helps them to spend dedicated time on AI. AI can create study plans for students. It can help them to stay organized. They can create daily to do lists. It helps them to create things faster. It becomes your personal guard against distractions.
- Prepares students for the future. It can help students to learn something new every day. It can help them to reflect every night. They learn to express their ideas clearly. They understand how to present their work online. They also develop real-world confidence. In minutes, they learn something their textbooks might never cover.

- Students become lazy – They overuse AI, which can reduce critical thinking. Children do not do the foundational work. Over-reliance on AI can lead to skill atrophy where calculation and original writing fail to develop fully.
- AI can reduce creativity – Students may not think or write on their own. AI can solve a Math problem, write an essay, and do homework, and this has a detrimental impact on the child’s development. When tailor-made answers are available, then students don’t think on their own.
- AI can provide incorrect information – AI models do not prioritize truth. AI tools are notorious for generating false information and statistics, often due to hallucinations. For a young learner who is dependent on the computer’s output, this can be dangerous. Every conversation a child has is logged and used to further train the model. Teachers and parents must teach the children that AI is not an authority.
- Too much screentime – When students use AI on a computer, their screentime increases. This can affect their eyesight as well as their physical health. AI bots keep children engaged with their answers. Hence, the creation of such dependencies hampers their mental health. This brings a change in their behaviour too. A detox is essentially a deliberate effort to lower the baseline of digital stimulation. Students should engage in reading, family board games, light meal preparation, or simply talking.
- Risk of cheating – Using AI to write an entire essay or solve a complex mathematical problem without effort is intellectual dishonesty. It is important to honour honesty to develop the skills the child needs for future success.
