Adjective Clause for Class 8–9 | Examples and Exercises

1. What is an Adjective Clause?

An adjective clause in a complex sentence does the work of an adjective, and so it qualifies some Noun or Pronoun in the Principal Clause.

An adjective clause is introduced by a relative pronoun or relative verb. Examples:

• This is the girl who won the race.
• This is the book which I read.
• This is the food that Sue cooked.
• The boy who shouted in the corridor has been punished.
• The time when the train departs is not known.
• Those who work hard succeed.
• This is the house where he stayed.
• The reason why he told a lie is not known.

The Relative Pronoun or Relative adverb is sometimes understood but not expressed. Example:

1. Buy all you can. (Here the relative pronoun that is understood).
2. Where is the pen I gave you. (Here the relative pronoun which is understood).
3. I met a girl I know. ( Here the relative pronoun whom is understood).
4. On the day you win the match I shall give you a chocolate. (Here the relative adverb when is understood).
5. The reason I have come is to ask for advice. ( Here the relative adverb why is understood).
