When to Use Will and Shall?

Will

• We will use will for the future.
• It is used in everyday language.
• Time is referred to as tomorrow, next week, month, year, etc.
• Example: ‘I will eat an apple this evening.’

Shall

• We use ‘shall’ with pronouns ‘I’ and ‘we.’
• It is often used in a formal context.
• Example: ‘I shall be late tomorrow.’
• ‘We shall go on a picnic next week.’

We also use will when we offer or decide to do something.

1. These books are very heavy. I will carry it for you.
2. I will make a cup of tea for you.

Do not use the present simple in sentences like these:

1. I think I will go to the market this week. (not I go)
2. I will phone you next week. (not I phone you).

Do not use I will for something you decided before.

1. There is a football match on TV tonight. I am going to watch it.
2. I am not singing in the concert tomorrow.

Agreeing to do something.

A: You know that man who met us last night. Can you give me his phone number?

B: Of course. I will give it to you tomorrow.

Promising to do something.

1. Thanks for lending me your bicycle. I will return it on Sunday.
2. I won’t think about what happened last night. I promise.

Asking somebody to do something.

1. Will you please be quiet? I am doing my homework.
2. Will you turn on the air conditioner, please?
3. Will you walk with me in the park?
4. Will you make a cup of coffee for me, please?
