Subject Verb Agreement means that the verb agrees with the subject in Number and Person.
What are Subject Verb Agreement Rules?

Subject Verb Agreement Rules.
- Two or more singular subjects connected by and usually take a verb in the plural.
Examples: John and Betty are here.
Fire and water do not agree.
Ravi and his friend have arrived.
- If two singular nouns refer to the same person or thing, the verb must be singular.
Examples: My friend has come, and the guide has come.
The orator and statesman is dead.
- If two subjects together express one idea, the verb may be in the singular.
Examples: Bread and milk is his only food.
Slow and steady wins the race.
- If the singular subjects are preceded by each or every, the verb is usually singular.

2. Two or more singular subjects connected by or nor, either…. or, neither…nor take a verb in the singular.
Examples: No nook or corner was left unexplored.
Each day and each hour brings its duty.
Every man, woman, and child was lost.
- When the subjects joined by or, nor are of different numbers, the verb must be plural. The plural subject must be placed next the verb.
- Jaya or her friends have drawn this.
- Neither Priya nor her pets was there.
- Either the girl or her parents have gone to the bank.
- When the subjects joined by or, nor are of different persons, the verb agrees in person with the one nearest to it.
- Either John or I am confused.
- Neither you nor your sister is lazy.
3. When subjects differing in number, or person, or both, are connected by and the verb must always be in the plural.
- She and I are happy.
- My sister and I have studied here for 2 years.
- You and I have done our homework.
- 4. A Collective noun takes a singular verb when the collection is thought as a whole.
- The mob has dispersed.
- The crew was small.
- 5.Some nouns that are plural in form, but singular in meaning, take a singular verb.
- Mathematics is my favourite subject.
- The news is exciting.
- The committee has been formed.
- 6. When a plural noun comes between a singular subject and its verb, the verb is often wrongly made to agree with the nearest plural noun.
- Each of the students is intelligent.
- Each of the girls was given a chance to participate.
- Neither of the women was late for work
- 7. Words joined to a singular subject by ‘with’ , ‘together with’, ‘in addition to’, ‘as well as’ etc. are parenthetical and therefore do not affect the number of the verb.
- Justice, as well as mercy, allows it.
- Tom, as well as Mike, deserves praise.
