The primary function of the simple present tense is to describe actions that are unchanging, habitual, or scheduled.

Structure of a Simple Present Tense

Formula: Subject + Base Verb.

Positive Form:

For I, we, you, and they use the base form of the verb. For he, she, it, add -s or -es to the base verb.

Examples:

I brush my teeth every day.

They walk to school every morning.

The cat sleeps on the mat.

Negative Form:

Formula: Subject + do/does + not Base verb.

Use don’t for I, we, you, they. Use doesn’t for he, she, it.

Examples:

I do not like mango.

He does not like tea.

We don’t go to the market on weekends.

Interrogative Form

Formula: Do/Does + Subject + Base verb?

Rule: Place do or does at the beginning of the sentence.

Do you play chess?

Does she speak English?

Where do they live?

(Remember to place wh-question before do / does).

Tips and Tricks

  • Use base verb with I , we, you, they.
  • Add s/es to verb with he,she,it.
  • For negatives – use do not or does not.
  • For questions- start with do or does, if it is a wh-question, place do or does after the wh-question.
