Whether school uniforms are mandatory is a controversial debate topic. Some learners believe that school uniform gives a sense of identity, instill discipline, provide security, make identification of students easier, and act as a social leveller. Others are of the notion that uniforms are old-fashioned, an unnecessary burden on parents, and even uncomfortable to wear. Let’s look at the points for and against this debate topic.

For School Uniform

  1. Uniforms give a sense of identity to the school.
  2. The students feel that they belong to the school. They feel united as they are part of an educational institution.
  3. Every student of the school feels like part of a bigger group.
  4. It instills a sense of discipline in school children and creates a feeling of belonging in the minds of school students.
  5. It strengthens decorum in school.
  6. Uniform psychologically motivates students to behave in a well-mannered way.
  7. Uniforms are a social leveller, where people are drawn from a wide cross-section of society.
  8. A uniform finishes these differences and thus reduces the gap between the rich and the poor. If some students in a school are unable to buy expensive clothes, they might develop an inferiority complex. On the other hand, students from rich families may end up wearing expensive clothes, which might create differences among students.
  9. The teachers also tend to treat all students equally when they are in the same uniform. The teachers are not biased. Both the teacher and students can focus on academics.
  10. Another big advantage is that if students stay away from school without permission and bunk school, they can be easily identified. If people find a student in a school dress roaming outside, they can easily identify which school the student is.
  11. Finally, the uniform provides security. For example, if some criminals or wrongdoers come to school, they can be easily spotted from afar. Students feel protected when in school, and these days, cameras in school keep strict vigilance.
  12.  Moreover, students don’t waste time thinking about what to wear. They have less pressure on them to be best dressed, and so they devote more time to studies. Every morning, it becomes a herculean task to decide what to wear. Some students may not have many dresses to wear to school.
  13. Uniform prepares the student for the world of work, which has a dress code. For instance, three companies in India with documented dress codes are Hindustan Copper Limited, which mandates business attire for employees, and both Hindustan Unilever and Lenovo India.
  14. They carry school emblems, colours, and heritage, which is a matter of pride for the students.

Against School Uniform

  1. Uniform is unattractive and old-fashioned.
  2. Students lose their individuality when they wear a uniform.
  3. Most of the school uniforms are not updated to the latest styles.
  4. The fabric of the uniform is mostly thick, and the stiff collars and ties make students uncomfortable.
  5. Expensive, so an unnecessary burden on parents.
  6. Many parents have to spend money on uniforms, which sometimes is unaffordable for them. For instance, my gardener sends his six-year-old son to school in a uniform. It is an extra burden on him, but he does it because it is mandatory to wear a uniform in school.
  7. Students can express themselves more effectively through their clothing and should be given the opportunity to showcase their individuality. Wearing a uniform creates an opposite effect.
  8. Students often find uniforms unattractive and boring.
  9. Some students even lose confidence when they feel that they don’t look smart in uniforms.
