
Difference between It and There
This article is on the difference between it and there. It also explains the use of it and there.
When we talk about something for the first time and want to say that it exists, we use there.
- There is a new mall in Model Town. (not ‘A new mall is in Model Town).
- I got late for work today. There was a lot of traffic. (not ‘It was a lot of traffic)
- Things are much more expensive now. There has been a big rise in the cost of living.
We use it to talk about a particular thing, place, fact, or situation.
- We went to the new mall. It’s very good. ( it= mall)
- ‘Was the traffic bad? Yes, it was terrible.’ (it=traffic)
- I wasn’t expecting them to lose the match. It (=that they lost) was a shock to me.
- I don’t like this park. There is nothing to do there. It’s a boring place.
- When we reached the hospital. There were already lot of patients there.
We can also use there by saying there will be, there must be, there used to be etc.
- He looked worried. There must be a reason behind it.
- There will be a lot of mosquitoes in the park.
- If people saved water, there wouldn’t be any water shortage.
- ‘Have we got milk?’ I’m not sure. There might be some in the fridge.
Compare there and it:-
- They play in the park. There must be a lot of noise made by children.
They play in the park. It must be very noisy.
- There used to be a library in the city center, but it closed a few months ago.
That building is now a school. It used to be a library.
We also use it to talk about distance, time, and weather.
- It is a long way from here to the bank.
- What day is it today?
- How far is it to the railway station?
- It was cloudy.
We also use it in sentences like:
- It was quite hot in the room. So, I opened the window.
- It was dark outside. So, I stayed at home.
- It is sad that James got injured in the accident.
- How far is it from here to the airport?
- It is five years since I went to the museum.
