What is Alphabetical Order?

Alphabetical order is a process of arranging words, names, or things in the sequence of letters from A to Z. This is similar to how words are arranged in a dictionary.

Example: Ant comes before Bee. This is because A comes before B.

If the first letter is the same, then the second letters are compared.

Example: Bee and Bug. So, Bee will come before Bug. Here, the second letters are compared.

When children learn alphabetical order, they learn to make new words by combining letters. Thus, they can read faster as they recognise words easily.

Alphabetical order is used to arrange books in libraries, names in attendance registers, and words in a dictionary. Even as a mentor, when I told my students to make a vocabulary book, the words in that book were written in alphabetical order.

  • Builds strong vocabulary

Children learn to group words. This enhances their memory retention. They learn to focus on the first, second, third, and fourth letters. They learn prefixes and suffixes. Their familiarity with word structure strengthens their vocabulary.

  • Improves thinking and sorting skills

Their cognitive ability is improved as their brain categorizes and compares words. They can think clearly once they become familiar with the word structures.
