What is Active and Passive Voice?

The form of the verb shows that the person referred to by the subject does something. This is denoted as Active Voice.

For example: Rohit (the person denoted by the subject) does something.

Rohit (subject) kicked (verb) the ball (object).

The verb is said to be in the active voice and is commonly used in writing and speaking. In the active voice, the person is denoted by the subject’s actions.

When something is done to the person or thing denoted by the subject, the verb is in the passive voice.

Here, the subject receives the action.

The vegetables (subject) were cut (passive verb) by the girl (agent).
