Use of Too and Enough

We use enough after adjectives and adverbs.

  • She didn’t go to school because she wasn’t good enough.
  • You won’t win the race if you don’t run fast enough.
  • She shouldn’t get married yet. She isn’t old enough.
  • He shouldn’t sit on the grass. The grass isn’t dry enough.
  • You won’t get selected for the football team if you don’t practice enough.
  • He didn’t talk to his neighbours because they weren’t kind enough.
  • She didn’t buy the dress because it wasn’t cheap enough.

Enough is used before nouns:

  • She didn’t buy the dress because it wasn’t enough cheap.
  • I’d like to go on a holiday but I haven’t got enough money.
  • Some of us had to buy raincoats because there weren’t enough umbrellas.

We can use enough without a noun:

  • I will lend you some books if you haven’t got enough.

The opposite is too much or too many.

  • We can’t stay in a five-star hotel. It costs too much.
  • There are too many students and not enough pencils.
  • There are too many shirts but not enough trousers in the cupboard.
  • He is too young to ride a motorcycle.
  • Let’s go for a walk. It’s too late to go for a walk.

Some more examples with enough:

  • He wasn’t rich enough to help the poor.
  • She is not brave enough to do bungee jumping.
  • I haven’t got enough milk to make ice cream.
  • He is too nice to be a politician.
  • He hasn’t got enough energy to play tennis.
  • She is not old enough to get married.
  • He is qualified enough to get the job.

We also use enough/ too ……………for (somebody/something)

  • They haven’t got enough toys for the children.
  • The house is big enough for them to stay.
  • The dress is too big for me. I need a smaller size.
  • The dish is too spicy. I need one with less spice.

Too and Enough Exercise

Make one sentence from two. Complete the new sentence using too or enough.

  1. I couldn’t drink the tea. It was too cold.
  2. Nobody could move the cupboard. It was too heavy.
  3. He couldn’t attend the meeting. He was too late.
  4. You can’t break the glass. The glass is too strong.
  5. He can’t clear the exam. It is too tough.
  6. He cannot wear the shirt. The shirt is too tight.
  7. Three people can’t sit on the bench. It isn’t wide enough.
